Lingerie Size Labels: Translate Without Guessing

Translation does not establish a size conversion

When a lingerie label is localized, preserve the meaning of the approved size information. Translating “size” or explaining a measurement chart is different from assigning a supposedly equivalent regional size. Keep the internal size identifier, chart reference and displayed wording on separate fields. If a regional equivalent has not been substantiated, leave it unconfirmed rather than filling it from a generic conversion table.

The black lace bra and garter set lists standard or custom size grading. Its product page does not provide a verified regional equivalence table for the chosen specification. A catalog size label therefore cannot establish a US, UK or other numeric equivalent for your order.

Start with the approved source

Identify the style, component scope and chart revision before translating. State whether a chart describes body measurements or finished garment measurements, its units and the measuring method where relevant. A translated heading must not turn a relaxed garment measurement into a body measurement or a flat width into a circumference.

For a set, specify whether the size identifier applies to the sellable set and which separate component records support it. This record does not imply that mixed-size sets are available. Confirm the actual ordering arrangement separately with the supplier.

Build a meaning-preservation record

  • Supplier style reference and buyer’s stable variant or size ID
  • Source size display and approved chart revision
  • Chart type, component scope, units and measurement definitions
  • Target language and proposed customer-facing wording
  • Any proposed regional equivalent and its supporting evidence
  • Language reviewer and technical sizing reviewer
  • Garment, package and listing versions using the wording
  • Approval scope and remaining questions

Keep identifiers as identifiers. If the internal record uses M, the wording surrounding it can be translated without silently replacing that identifier. Where units are converted, retain the source values, identify the conversion and agree rounding. Changing units does not establish a new size system or validate fit.

Review the sentence, not just the number

Ask a competent language reviewer whether the target text preserves what is being measured and what the chart can support. Ask the responsible sizing reviewer separately whether any equivalence claim is justified for the actual style and approved specification. Language fluency alone does not supply missing fit evidence.

For example, “garment waist measured flat” must still describe the garment and a flat width after translation. Removing those qualifiers can make the same number misleading. Preserve uncertainty as well: “proposed” or “awaiting confirmation” must not become an approved statement in a second language.

Handle an unsupported equivalent explicitly

In a hypothetical handover, the supplier’s record identifies size M while a retailer proposes a regional numeric size for its storefront. Keep M linked to the approved source chart and ask who can substantiate the proposed equivalent. The chart explanation may be translated while the numeric equivalence remains pending. This is an example of a review decision, not a conversion recommendation.

If the chart changes, reopen the affected language rows. A correct translation of an obsolete chart is still the wrong reference for a new order. Preserve the old wording and record which label or listing revisions need updating.

Reconcile the places where the size appears

Compare the garment label, outer package and buyer’s product listing against the same record. They need not use identical sentences, but they must refer to the same variant and chart. Check the final rendered proof for character order, units and legibility as well as meaning. This review does not establish destination-market regulatory compliance or guarantee fit.

For an OEM or private-label project, prepare the source chart, proposed languages and affected product references. Send the record through the wholesale inquiry page and ask which size and label details require confirmation before quotation and artwork approval.
